If you like simulation games in general, ElectroCity is a fantastic addition to your backlog. The game isn’t made by a traditional game developer: instead, it’s made by Genesis Energy, New Zealand’s leading electricity provider. Before you end saying this game is nothing more than a huge advertisement, it isn’t. It can be classified as an educational game, and it targets students, particularly primary and young teenagers, and helps the basics of power generation, cost, and distribution. It’s doesn’t give a sophisticated look, but by all means, it helps set the stage for deeper learning and understanding.

If you have had the chance to play city-building and simulation games in general, you would not have a hard time learning the ropes of ElectroCity. However, there are rather steep learning curves, and it would do you a lot of good to read the How to Play section and go through the tutorials. The user interface may also appear unfamiliar even to veteran simulation players.

As soon as you start a new game, you are immediately transported into your own little town. The map is generated randomly, so you’ll have a fresh experience every time you start a new game. However, you’ll have a small population, and various bodies of land and water will be surrounding your tiny settlement. For example, there are trees making up a forest, a river which is close by, and a mountain a just a few squares away. It’s also likely that your town will be near a beach, while a wind farm will not be far off, supplying the town with electricity.

Every turn, you receive revenue from taxes, as long as the money you gather is greater than your expenses. Speaking of turns, you will get a chance to survey certain areas of the map to see if they contain natural resources, like coal and gas. Once you locate them, you’ll be given a the choice to harvest these resources. Eventually, you can build a power plant to use them for energy generation, which the game puts emphasis on.

In building these structures though, tread lightly: harvesting a resource like coal causes pollution. Power generation through wind farms may not be enough, and insufficient energy distribution won’t make your citizens happy. As a player, you’ll need to learn how to achieve energy sufficiency without harming the environment too much, and this plays a part in deciding what your score will be at the end of the game.

Apart from the power plant and energy-related elements, you can build structures like theme parks, beaches, and airports to make your town more attractive and at the same time, lure in more citizens. The actions you take have their own benefits and consequences. For example, raising taxes bring in more money, but it doesn’t make the community happy.

The game ends in the 150th turn, wherein you will be given a grade based on four different areas, which are Population, Popularity, Management, and Environment. If you think 150 turns is too many, don’t worry: it’s a fast-paced game and you’ll be done with a single map in a couple of hours. Furthermore, you can save your town in the “Finished Towns” section of the website, especially if you’ve gotten a high score, to flaunt it with your friends and family.

So, should you be trying out ElectroCity? Definitely - it’s a decent city-building game, and although it’s not as immersive as other games in the genre, it’s something that would appeal to you. Better yet, it’s a game you would want your kids to play (if you’re a parent). ElectroCity Streszczenie
