Virtual Mom: Happy Family 3D is a simulation game composed of many different levels. In each, there’s an objective that the mom has to accomplish before you can proceed to the next stage. The objective is often broad like feeding the dog, and then it is broken down into a task(s) such as buying the food.
Unlike other games, including simulations, where progression is evident, this one doesn’t have one. But it makes perfect sense because motherhood and household chores do not have it. There could be many things to do on certain days and almost none on the following. Even if you reach higher levels, it’s possible to complete only one task for the day.
In between, the players can solve puzzles and other brain teasers. The great thing about these mini-games is they don’t feel intrusive or completely separate games. Rather, they are integrated seamlessly into the storyline. For instance, solving the position of the planets is actually part of the son’s science homework.
The gameplay, however, presents some challenges, especially for the players who are not used to simulation games. First will be the control. To move the character, you need to swipe left and right, making sure she’s walking on a path that doesn’t have barriers. This can be a problem for people who have a poor sense of direction. Even though there are arrows to indicate where she needs to go, as well as footprints, understanding directions can be tough particularly once her universe expands.
The process is also time-consuming and exhausting. You don’t feel the speed, and the movements don’t feel natural.
Some tasks also don’t make sense. For instance, the objective is to convince the husband to take the main character to shopping, but she needs to make a distraction because the partner is watching television. The task now is to turn on the alarm.
The graphics also leave a lot to be desired. For a virtual simulation game, it looks crude, reminding you of the early days of animation. The characters lack facial expressions, and the movements are awkward. When they’re talking, they don’t look as if they’re facing each other.
On the upside, the sounds are awesome as they try to mimic the ones in the real world such as dog barks or the cries of a baby. The minor issue is the background music can easily overpower them.
The game is available for free, and there are no in-app purchases, but no game comes without a cost, and like the ones that are free, this comes with so many ads. One ad appears each time you complete the level.
